OpenShot 4.0 adds color grading and ML subject isolation
OpenShot 4.0 is a major update to the free open-source video editor, adding color wheels, curves, LUTs and video scopes plus built-in screen and webcam recording. It can also isolate subjects using machine learning models that run locally.
What it does
OpenShot 4.0 is a major update to the free, open-source video editor. A new Color View adds color wheels, curves, LUTs and live video scopes, and a Recording View captures screen, webcam, microphone and system audio into separate editable tracks.
AI-powered masks let you select a subject and follow it through a clip using YOLO, EfficientSAM and Cutie models that run on your own computer.
Results and limits
The source is the release post. It says Blur is dramatically faster and other effects and the timeline are quicker, but gives no benchmarks. For tricky frames where the subject changes shape or is hidden, you add more prompts.
Worth knowing
It's free with no cloud service, AI account or subscription needed for the masks; the models download on demand. Expanded Qt 6 support improves compatibility with newer Linux distributions.
Try it yourself
Right-click [clip] > Look > Adjust Colors to open Color Grade, warm the highlights and cool the shadows, then add an AI mask on [subject] to keep their skin tones untouched.
