OpenFill brings Photoshop-style generative fill to GIMP and PhotoCraft, running locally through ComfyUI

OpenFillFree, open source (Apache 2.0, runs locally)

OpenFill is a free, open-source plug-in that adds generative fill, object removal, generative expand and text-to-image to the GIMP 3 and PhotoCraft image editors. It runs everything on your own graphics card through a hidden ComfyUI backend, so you select an area, type a prompt and get the result on a new layer.

What it does

Fill paints a selection from a prompt with up to five variations, Remove erases the selection with no prompt at the image's own resolution, Expand paints new borders when you drag the canvas edges, and Create makes a new image or layer from a prompt. ComfyUI starts with the editor, listens only on your own computer and shuts down when you close it; the model manager suggests weights that fit your card and also finds your own SD 1.5 inpainting, SDXL and FLUX.1 Fill files.

Results and limits

The project's table for an RTX 4070 Laptop lists about 5 seconds for Remove with LaMa (2 GB), about 9 seconds for a fast fill with DreamShaper 8 Inpainting (4 GB), and 20 to 45 seconds for a quality fill with RealVisXL V5 (8 GB). On an M3 MacBook Air with 16 GB all four tools passed, with Remove in 4.0 seconds. Early users on r/comfyui saw a blurred patch after removing a car; the author traced it to RealVisXL working at about 1024 px and said keeping more of the original resolution is in progress.

Worth knowing

Both builds are beta: the PhotoCraft panel is at 0.2.4 and the GIMP 3.2 plug-in at 2.0.0-beta.6, both released on 26 October with new AMD support (Radeon RX 7000 or newer, one user report so far). FLUX and Qwen fills, Expand and Create work at about 1024 px and come back softer on large images. It needs an NVIDIA or recent AMD card, or an Apple Silicon Mac for PhotoCraft, with 8 GB for the quality models. Apache 2.0, not affiliated with PhotoCraft.
